Berg Chilling Systems was selected to design and supply a 358-ton air-cooled chilling system for Atura Power to support hydrogen gas cooling at their Niagara Falls, Ontario facility. The system required redundancy, the ability to handle extreme temperature fluctuations, and a high-efficiency glycol cooling loop to maintain process stability.

Atura Power needed a high-capacity, outdoor air-cooled chiller system capable of:

• Maintaining a process outlet temperature of -3°C (26.6°F) while handling a 50% propylene glycol mixture.
• Providing full-load redundancy, ensuring continued operation even during maintenance.
• Operating efficiently at part loads down to 30%, while maintaining steady pressure and flow rates.
• Withstanding outdoor conditions, including noise control and compliance with ASME 31.3 process piping standards.

Berg’s Tailored Solution:

Berg designed a robust, energy-efficient outdoor cooling system to ensure uninterrupted hydrogen gas cooling with full-load redundancy. The system includes:

• Three Outdoor Air-Cooled Chillers – One unit serves as a backup for full-load redundancy.
• Process Cooling Loop – Includes a 2,000-gallon reservoir tank and five centrifugal pumps for steady circulation.
• Dual-Circuit Screw Compressors – Optimized performance with modulating hot gas capacity control.
• Schneider PLC with 6” Touch Screen HMI – Real-time monitoring, automated controls, and alarm notifications.
• UV-Resistant Insulation & Self-Adhesive Membrane Coating – Ensures long-term durability and protection against environmental conditions.

This custom-engineered system guarantees continuous, energy-efficient hydrogen gas cooling, meeting Atura Power’s operational reliability and efficiency needs.
